Welcome to Bradford McCormick's website. Please come in! (This image created not later than 26 June 2003)

"Not yet and yet already." (Hermann Broch)

"...the root of history is the working, creating human being who reshapes and overhauls the given facts. Once he has grasped himself and established what is his, without expropriation and alienation, in real democracy, there arises in the world something which shines into the childhood of all and in which no one has yet been: homeland." (Ernst Bloch)

"The war is over. You have come home, while yet there is time." (BMcC[18-11-46-503]; my hope)

his website replaces a website on which I (BMcC[18-11-46-503]) had worked for 23 years that was destroyed in early 2021 when my then Internet Service Provider (Cloud9 Internet, White Plains, New York USA), decided that web hosting was not profitable for them.[1] This new website, on DreamHost, is compiled by a complex transformation script from a large educational research website owned by Professor Robert O. McClintock, Teachers College Columbia University, where I originally created the present pages in Wiki (some references to "A Place to Study" (APtS) that I have not yet cleaned up remain here, sorry). Authoring with Wiki proved chronically frustrating.[2]

A lot of work I have done to create these webpages is "behind the scenes", not visible. Maybe nobody else in the history of the Internet has tried as I have, to produce a website that is both intellectually substantive and esthetically elegant, using only primitive web applications to create technically simple static web pages (I would have preferred an Internet all directly built with SGML). "God is in the details." (Mies van der Rohe)[3]

The conversion from Wiki to plain web pages has been painful, as can be seen from the script I have used for this purpose: here[4]; some formatting has been lost, so the pages do not look as nice here as in their original Wiki location.[5] All the pages here are validated HTML 5. "Invenit et fecit", a phrase I borrowed from the independent watchmaker F.P. Journe, means: I have personally both creatively conceived and hand implemented each page. In working on my webpages, I THINK dialectically, self-reflectively philosophically, not merely code preconceived semiotic material.

Due to my repressive childrearing I am -- still at age 75+ years -- afraid to think what I would think. Our toxic introjects make the longest demands on us: they live forever (Sophocles, out of context); but I sometimes am able to recover it later: L'esprit d'escalier. I (BMcC) am always falling....

Beware o man thy grievous fall....

Everywhere I go, here I am.[6] Please excuse and appreciate that what I have written is often not what I would autochthously have meant to write, because my mental and emotional reflexes were relentlessly trampled upon by my benighted childrearenders (aka: parents; like in an automobile crash...) who were determined to make me believe and feel what they had been socially conditioned to believe they were supposed to make me believe and feel, instead of nurturing my own innate faculty of judgment -- as if I was their goose for foie gras.

Not only is no thought ever final for anyone (read here), but "my thoughts" are often not my own (autochthonously arising...) thoughts, which latter, often, I belatedly recover after I have said something I didn't exactly mean, to try to protect my soul from their intrusions → when it's too late. I suffer from chronic l'esprit d'escalier. Wilfred Bion wrote: all social customs are shared hallucinoses aka social psychoses. Not good, but less bad to be spiritually cripped than to have that psychotic disorder normatively socially conditioned people ideate (not: self-accountably THINK...) to be "normal". I do my best, and revise frequently even if often too late for it to matter. I keep trying, and failing, and falling....

I hope you will find value in what I have done.[7] (There's even some amusements.) Be forewarned that I am not politically correct. Please start herePlease go here!

"When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak, for we were not meant to survive." 1. I conscientiously kept backup copies of this website, so I have been able to reload it here. What has been lost, primarily, are all the search engine placements I built up during 20+ years, starting back when Altavista, not Google was the premier search engine. Secondariiy, I used Perl cgi scripts to show a lot of images and for other "boilerplate" functions, so all that has been lost. The "heart" of it all is still here, just not very accessible to anybody. The maw without a mind (aka: "invisible hand") of so-called "free enterprise" is not an appropriate place for anything of lasting value.
  2. I already had PTSD (Post Tramaumtic Stress Syndrome) from previous computer programmer work, including my last programming job where I had to try to guess how to make Angular do undocumented user interface tricks.
  3. The images I have here are often not as I (BMcC[18-11-46-503]) would like them. In particular, I generally cannot align stuff to pixel perfect precision. They are the best I can do with the poor tools I have, so kindly try to imagine them as more "professionally" done than they are.
  4. I (BMcC[18-11-46-503]) do not pretend to be a computer "scientist" (is "computer science" a science? or is it mathematics when it is not code hacking?), just to have been a "computer programmer". Is it fair to say that as of +2022.01.05, all the webpages here have been compiled? I write all the text on Prof. McClintock's Wiki website and run it thru my julia script and correct validation errors in the output text in the Wiki source. At some point I will begin writing the text here on my Dreamhost website, something which I have now experimented with in one page: here. Me an Alice going down s rabbit hole?
  5. The pages on the Wiki site in their turn would have looked better if Wiki was better: Being coerced to use a soul-deadening tool discourages me (BMcC[18-11-46-503]) from trying to come up with creative, imaginative (or even "obvious"!) solutions to the problems that I would not have been stuck with if the tool had been good in the first place.
  6. Peregrinatio in stabilitate. Art Appel, an IBM Research employee, had posted on his office door: "Three things are not possible: The desire of the rich to have more, the desire of the sick for something different, and the desire of the traveler to be any place but here."
  7. To err is human, and this website has gotten so complex thatseems to me (BMcC[18-11-46-503]) highly unlikely I haven't messed up some stuff in it, especially by 𝄆my very efforts to keep everything straight𝄇. You may find some factually incorrect sentences here, and . Please let me know the corrections (bradmcc@bmccedd.org). I do sincerely hope, however, that yourself, like Marshall McLuhan and Masud Khan, value spirit/soul-expanding playful errors more than merely denotatively factually correct Ascii character strings, except, of course, in misfortunate situations of peril. Reality is a thing to be overcome.
  8. The word by way of preface which seeks to break through the screen stretched between the author and the reader by the book itself does not give itself out as a word of honor. But it belongs to the very essence of language, which consists in continually undoing its phrase by the foreword or the exegesis, in unsaying the said, in attempting to restate without ceremonies what has already been ill understood in the inevitable ceremonial in which the said delights. (Emanuel Levinas, "Totality and Infinity", 1961/1969, p. 30)
  9. Note on date format: Prof. McClintock and I have had some interactions about how to format dates. All my life I have been repulsed by American date and time formats. Prof. McClintock thought up one thing and I have built on his idea for dates. As for the "v" numbers, I "have a thing" about audit trails and keeping track of things. If ever anybody complains about one of my webpages here itself, as opposed to its semantic content, I want to know what version of the page they are referring to, so as not to try the wrong defendant.

My (BMcC) cat chop signature seal. I do not identify myself with "my name", but rather as a playful cat. Meow!
