Saint with halo

Picture of the Headmaster of the so-called "preparatory" school I (BMcC[18-11-46-503]) was sentenced to from 7th thru 12th grade of petty pedagogy. Note that word: "Headmaster". This was after 1863 in USA: Mr. Middleton was absolute ruler of an autocracy over middle class mid 20th century teenage males. He had no empathy much less sympathy. I liked the picture for a long time because he looks clueless, like he might already have have senile dementia or been dimwitted from birth. But only when I enlarged the picture did I notice the big shadow on the wall. It seems symbolic of his essence, like Christian saints in paintings often have halos symbolizing their, albeit very different, essences.
