If you play soccer, and you hit the ball with your head, over time you will probably suffer mild brain damage. You will probably lose some of your mind. Long term effects are not yet fully known.
[ ]
If you are a parent, the implications should be clear, especially if you are interested in your child using his or her head for intellectual or artistic pursuits, aka the life of the mind. Don't just do part of the job of protecting your child's mind by keeping him or her away from "drugs" -- soccer (and, of course, even worse: boxing!) is dangerous, too!
[ ]
What do I (BMcC) recommend? That you and your child play safer sports, like swimming and tennis. But exercise is far more important than playing any sport, because exercise helps a person be healthy ("mens sana in corpore sano"). I recommend that you and your child get into regular, "low impact" aerobic exercising. I started exercising when I was about 38 years old (I'm still doing it, 20 years later, albeit with a 5 year gap between 1999 and 2004).
